| Customer Reviews: Delicious but an Aquired taste for sure November 16, 2009 Amrita Pritam (Berkeley, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been eating this salt since I was a child, not this brand but Kala Namak. It is commonly served with fruit and added to lemonades and other North Indian drinks. It is ground volcanic mineral salt and has a STRONG pungent smell and taste. I will not recommend it to anyone because it is such an acquired taste but I LOVE it. I have never used it in cooking, so don't know how that works. And to the reviewer Gordino, the smell is not a result of humanity's influence but because of presence of Hydrogen Sulfide, which is naturally present in the volcanic lava.
Salt Of the Earth? No. July 25, 2009 Judy Svendsen (Altadena, California) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This salt is really terrible! A very weird texture, doesn't dissolve easily, and it's more of a powder than a salt.I use a lot of flavored
salts in cooking, but this will not be one of them. No fault with
the supplier though,they shipped quickly.

Limberger cheese? Yummy. Lutefisk? Yah sure, you betcha. Durian fruit? Any time. But Kala Namak Salt? Well, let's pause... Have you ever visited India? or Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh? If so, do you remember the pervasive odor everywhere except your hotel lobby? That odor even impregnates the money; I brought home a wad of rupees from Nepal twenty-five years ago and the odor still clings to the paper.
A friend of mine brought me a selection of 'gourmet' sea salts a few weeks ago. One of them, Hawaiian Alaea, has become a favorite, but this Kala Namak is the sort of stuff you might offer a dubious guest as a practical joke. I note that one previous reviewer has objected to the smell. It reminds me of tide pools at the mouth of the Ganges. But the surprise is that the taste perfectly matches the aroma, and permeates any food to which it is added. If this is the 'salt of the earth', that earth has absorbed too much of humanity's effluence.
I wonder how it would taste on tofu....
